Founded in 2001 by The Duke of York and John Simpson, The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy is an international mixed tournament played solely on Open venue (links) courses. This unique event sees up to 70 of some of the world’s most talented male and female junior golfers battle it out in a 54-hole stroke play competition. All of the competitors are either the current holders of their Under 18 National Championship or have won another recognised major golfing event in the applicable year.

The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy continues to promote the development of junior golf, encourage competitiveness and friendship between individual champions whilst providing them with an opportunity to play on championship courses against their peers. The event has always been, and continues to be supported and overseen by the R&A and participation attracts points towards the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Since the inaugural tournament in 2001, the competition has expanded and is widely regarded as one of the most significant events on the worldwide junior calendar. Previous winners have come from Iceland, Thailand and Canada, highlighting the truly global standing of this prestigious junior tournament.

The event boasts a hugely impressive array of former competitors, including professionals Ariya Jutanugarn, Anna Nordqvist, Rory Mcllroy, Pablo Martin, Oliver Fisher, Matteo Manassero and both the men’s and women’s former number one amateurs, Joaquín Niemann and Leona Maguire. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, there was a total of 5 alumni competing.

Duke of York Young Champions Trophy

This tournament is an opportunity for young boys and girls from all over the world to play in the UK on some of our best courses, in the most testing weather… It’s about giving them the opportunity to understand where they stand amongst their peers and it is through this sort of competition that future great golfers, both professional and amateur, will be identified and encouraged. There are so many talented young sports people and I am determined to assist with their endeavours.

The Duke of York

The Duke of York is a keen sportsman and works to encourage greater participation of young people in golf and the overall worldwide development of the game. Although the WAGR ranking of the tournament is an important aspect of the competition, HRH is keen to ensure that boys and girls from countries where golf is still in its infancy have the opportunity to participate.

HRH is Patron and co-founder of The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy.
