Finland’s Oliver Lindell hit a magnificent round of 66 to win The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy 2015 by 1 shot at Prince’s Golf Club.
16 year old Lindell played a near perfect round as he finished the tournament 9 under par. He was presented with the trophy by The Duke of York outside the Clubhouse. “I felt very good in the final round and I feel great now. This is my fifth win of the year and it is very special,” said Lindell. The Fin also recorded the Best Boys Round in the competition with his efforts today.
HRH The Duke of York watched the final groups making their way down the back nine.
Overnight leader Felix Palson continued yesterday’s good form as he shot a 4 under par 68 to finish second and cement his place as the Boy’s Runner-up. Chile’s Joaquin Neimann was third, a further shot behind.
The tournament’s Leading Girl award was received by Italian Carlotta Ricolfi after she finished level par after a score of 74 today. She was also awarded the prize for the Best Girls Round after her ladies course record 67 on the opening day of the tournament, a round which included two eagles on the opening two holes.
South Africa’s Ivanna Samu was awarded the Girls Runner-up prize after she finished in joint ninth position. “It was a great experience playing the top players around this course. The standard of golf is a lot higher than usual and makes you come out of your comfort zone and force yourself to post low scores and bounce back from disappointment. It’s fantastic”, said Samu.
A number of players recorded low scores on a glorious final day on the Kent coast, with a light breeze allowing for favourable conditions.
The excellent scoring came from the start in the final round with Dutch competitor Roos Haarman two under after two holes, allowing her to finish tied eleventh for the tournament. The Dutch 17 year old spoke after her final round of 69: “Today worked for me as I putted pretty well which allowed me to make more birdies, and I hit everything pretty close to the flags. In this tournament you gain lots of experience as you play on a links course so it isn’t your usual style of play.”
Speaking at the trophy presentation, The Duke said: “I would like to congratulate all of you for being such wonderful competitors this week. The course has been presented in an outstanding condition and this has been an excellent tournament. I look forward to seeing those of you who move forward into the senior game and I wish you all every continued success.”
The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy 2016 will take place at Royal Birkdale in September, 2016.
